For specific dates and times of walks and other activities, click here.

Accessible to over five million people in the greater Delaware Valley (which includes southeastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey), the Heinz Refuge has much to offer in terms of educational and recreational activities.

Guided Walks

Every Saturday and Sunday throughout the year, there are guided walks led by local nature enthusiasts. Walk themes cover a wide range of interests, including but not limited to birdwatching, plant identification, and photography. For a map of the trails, click on the green Trails Map button above.

Trail Tamers

Have fun with our Trail Tamers Group at 9 AM on the second Saturday of every month. Work on developing or maintaining trails, wildlife habitats, or sprucing up photo blinds, trail benches, and more. Gloves and tools are always provided.

Story Time and Nature Crafts

Story time and nature crafts are available for young children, usually on weekends. Click on the Activity Schedule below for dates and times.

Hiking, Biking, and Jogging

Hiking, biking, and jogging are favorite activities along the Refuge's ten-mile trail system, including a half-mile trail through prime wildlife habitat that is wheelchair accessible.

Canoe or Kayak

If you bring your own canoe or kayak, the refuge has a place to launch it. Canoeing down Darby Creek in the Refuge, one can venture out into the largest remaining freshwater tidal marsh in the state of Pennsylvania, and totally forget that you are within the city limits.

Click here to see 2012 tidal charts for the Heinz Refuge.

Fishing is permitted along the banks of Darby Creek and the impoundment. Bait boxes, rods, and tackle are available for lending, free of charge to fishermen of all ages. Adults wishing to fish require a license.

Whether hiking the trails, taking a guided tour, or gliding through refuge waters in a canoe, opportunities to capture nature with a camera are boundless.
